The first class of my fall-session Fundamentals of Music course begins through Portland Adult Education. Go to the PAE web site to register.

Here’s a course description:

A one semester introduction to the fundamentals of music notation, theory, and harmony. This course will cover the following: basic acoustic principles including the overtone series; the musical staff, clefs and registers; note names and solfege; rhythm and note values; meter and time signatures; the musical modes; major and minor scales, and scale-degree names; other commonly used scales such as the pentatonic and blues scales; key signatures and the circle of fifths; intervals and historical concepts of consonance and dissonance; basic chord construction with triads and the dominant seventh; and simple chord progressions.
